The Conquistador Golf Course
​
This is a championship 18-hole golf course with sand traps, water hazards, practice driving range and putting green. The course features an excellent playing surface and beautiful surroundings that provide the challenge to make every round of golf enjoyable. The course is the best value in the region for golf.
​
The Conquistador has its own personality and stunning panoramic scenery. From almost any spot on the course one can view La Plata Peak, Mesa Verde, and Sleeping Ute Mountain. The Conquistador course is mostly flat and lined by Ponderosa pine and piñon trees. This public course is open March 1 through November 15 depending on the weather. Tee times are accepted three days in advance.

Water hazards (lakes and creeks) come into play on eight of the eighteen holes, and the small greens are moderately undulating. The most difficult hole is #5, a 415-yard par 4, featuring a sharp dogleg left with trees on both sides of the fairway and requires an accurate approach shot onto the most undulated green on the course. This course has a reputation for having one of the best greens in the 4 corners region. With consistent speed and true roll it's enjoyable to all players.

Local Amenities
Cortez offers an impressive array of parks, trails, natural areas, and preserves — 294 acres of them! A weekly Farmer's Market features locally produced organic vegetables, fruits, honey, baked goods and live music. Several exceptional galleries and trading posts reflect the culture and creativity of the southwest. Cortez is the ideal jumping-off point for many adventures in the Four Corners area.

Carpenter Trail and Natural Area
This trail can be accessed from two locations. On the East side, it begins as the sidewalk on the northwest corner of Mildred Road and Empire Street and heads north. On the West end, the trail may be accessed on Lebanon Road north of Highway 491. This great open space offers opportunities for hiking, biking, rollerblading, nature watching or whatever else the imagination may allow. The main 1.5 mile trail is paved. There are also many dirt paths that veer off into the hills. These are perfect for the more adventurous soul that prefers off road hiking and biking.

Mesa Trail
The Mesa Trailhead is located at end of South Cedar Street. The trail run is 1 mile each way and passes through the north end of the Hawkins Preserve. Please contact the Recreation Center for details regarding the Mesa Trail.

Cortez Municipal Aquatics Complex
The Cortez Municipal Aquatics Complex is located at 803 E. Montezuma Avenue. This facility is open to the public seven days a week for your enjoyment. This is an outdoor pool and is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The aquatics complex hosts a 125-foot double loop water slide. Small children can also have a blast in our regulated depth baby pool. Locker rooms are equipped with showers and lockers. Outside food or coolers are not allowed, as concessions are sold on site.
Many activities are available for children and adults alike. The Cortez Municipal Aquatics Complex participates in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program for people who would like to learn or to refine their swimming skills.

Cortez Recreation Center
The Cortez Recreation Center offers fun for everyone! There is an array of activities for both young and old (but young at heart). They offer yearly passes, 20 punch passes as well as per-entry fees that allow everyone to share this great facility at 425 Roger Smith Avenue!
